Task: Analyze Billy’s attitude towards his Aboriginal origin.
In the beginning of the Story ‘‘Going Home‘‘ written by Archie Weller we find out, that Billy Woodward desperately tries to hide his Aboriginal background, and wishes to fit in the white man‘s world. It is said, that Billy does not even know the world of ‘‘spirits, and descending darkness‘‘[l. 3-5] apparently there is no connection towards Billy‘s Aboriginal roots and his life now, but his black skin colour. After graduating Billy started college: he did not only forget about his family, but he was also trying to fit in a whole new life. In addition to that Billy is ashamed of his black background, even his family. When his drunk uncle fell asleep on the stairs of Billy‘s house, white neighbours ‘‘peered out of their windows‘‘, Billy was so embarrassed, that he decided to move the next day. Another encounter with his ‘‘ugly, oh so ugly‘‘ Aunt , makes Billy feel ashamed to be related to ‘‘a thing like that‘‘ [l. 99]. Billy‘s attitude towards his Aboriginal origin slowly starts to become more positive when he meets Darcy, an Aboriginal hitchhiker, on his journey back home. He has to accept, that his father died five years ago, when he was ran over by a truck. Hence there is definitely an emotional bond between Darcy and Billy. The Aboriginal men Darcy and Billy even start to become something like friends. Billy, the man who once rejected any sort of Aborigines, becomes more open-minded indeed approachable. One night, Billy can‘t stop thinking about the past, the days his dad was still alive.‘‘He can hear his father telling legends, and his mother slowly singing hymns‘‘ For the first time Billy is dealing with his Aboriginal background, remembering how things used to be and letting past events influence the present. When the Police accuses Billy and his brother Carlton of robbery saying that ‘‘You Woodwars are all the same‘‘ he realizes that he will never escape his Aboriginal identity, no matter how hard he tries.
